Shanghai Nights

I absolutely love delivering a handbag in Asia. The sights, the smells, the tastes it’s all new and always so exciting. Like one big sensory explosion! Shanghai has got to be one of my top new destinations.

Shopping in Shanghai
I have a number of elegant, beautiful Hermes connoisseurs there who have insatiable appetites for all things luxury. This time I meet with a young advertising exec. Self-made and crazy clever she is one of my most vibrant clients. Always dressed impeccably she styles herself on famous movie icons, like Greta Garbo and our Hermes favourite Grace Kelly. She is chic and a natural beauty. This time I’m adding to her classic collection of Kelly bags in all skins, all classic black. She has chosen a stunning 35cm Black Kelly in shiny porosus croc. Extremely rare and an absolute showstopper.

We meet at my hotel. The fantastic Waterhouse. This hotel is cutting edge in every way. It is Shoreditch meets Brooklyn with Copenhagen thrown in for good measure.

We head straight to Warehouse by Suzhou Creek for a quick bite and a caffeine hit. Warehouse too feels incredibly modern. Ahead of its time in so many ways. Eco friendly and great value, they power the building with recycled rainwater and grow veg on the roof. It feels completely the opposite to our general perception of polluted mass market China. Plus the coffee is seriously delicious too.

It seems each time I come here I find another gem in the brilliant melting pot that is Shanghai, and Warehouse is no exception.

My old favourite though, is to head down to The Bund and potter along watching the thousands of city dwellers do their evening exercise. There are boat rides and high rise lights and stunning flower beds too. I could spend hours here just taking it all in. However, not one to shy away from a good cocktail and some tunes my guide insists we pop to her favourite club, The Geisha, for a nightcap and a little more people watching to boot.

This crazy Japansese style club has all the big time DJ’s but also offers a beautiful terrace to sip sake and relax after a long day. This is Shanghai Nights at its best. The ideal mix of music, drink and people watching.

Rather later than expected I bid farewell to my Chinese Grace Kelly and promise to send her the next croc Hermes Kelly bag we get in to add to her blossoming collection. As usual after a day in Shanghai I’m exhausted, inspired and even more in awe than before.
